The EGO/Virgo Outreach Team

Our Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team consists mostly of scientists working in the Virgo Collaboration plus an EGO staff member.

To contact us, please direct all enquiries and requests to outreachteam_at_ego-gw.it

Email: narnaud_at_lal.in2p3.fr

I worked in Virgo as an undergraduate and then as a PhD student from 1997 to 2002. Then I joined Virgo again at the end of 2013 after a decade of flavor physics (LHCb, BaBar, LUMI and the late SuperB project). Outside Virgo, I am coordinating the outreach activities of the CNRS institute I belong to (the IN2P3) and of my lab (the LAL, in Orsay).

Carlo Bradaschia
Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Sezione di Pisa

Email: carlo.bradaschia_at_pi.infn.it

I have been a particle physicist since 1967 to 1990 (DESY, R801 at ISR, NA1 at SPS, Aleph at LEP). Later I have been fascinated by gravitational waves and I directed all my efforts to Virgo from 1990 to today.
Always as hardware developer and builder of scintillating counters, wire chambers, hadron calorimeters, seismic isolation, UHV system, I am taking part, as organizer and performer, to the European Researchers’ Night since 2009.

Gilles Bogaert
ARTEMIS, Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, Nice

Email: gilles.bogaert@oca.eu

I am a researcher at ARTEMIS, involved in Advanced-Virgo optics simulation. I used to work before on the Fermi telescope and in communication and outreach projects.

Jerome Degallaix
Laboratoire des Matériaux Avancés, Lyon

Email: j.degallaix_at_lma.in2p3.fr

After a PhD working on thermal effect in the interferometer and a research experience in Germany on the GEO detector, I joined the Virgo Collaboration in 2010. I am working on optical simulations, tool essential to design and then understand the detector we have.

Originally from France, after travelling around for studies and work, I landed in Italy in 2005 and I have been working at EGO since then.
The only non-Physicist in the Outreach team, I contribute to the team with the eyes of an “outsider” and coordinate at EGO the events and activities on site.

Massimiliano Razzano
University of Pisa and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare Sezione di Pisa

Email: massimiliano.razzano_at_pi.infn.it

I joined Virgo in 2013 and work mainly on data analysis. I also work in high-energy astrophysics and I am part of the Fermi-LAT Collaboration. After my PhD, I worked as postdoc at the University of California in Santa Cruz and at the University of Stanford. I am also a science journalist and write for Italian scientific magazines. And of course, enjoy any other form of science communication!

Email: rolland_at_lapp.in2p3.fr

I work in Virgo since end 2006. I am charge of the calibration of the detector and, since 2011, sub-system manager of the Advanced Virgo sub-system dealing with software and electronics for fast digital control loops and data collection.

My research interests are focused on the role of noise and fluctuations in physical systems. From this point of view I have developed studies in a wide range of topics as diverse as the detection of gravitational waves and energy harvesting from vibrations. Since its foundation in 1999, I am a member of the Noise in Physical Systems Laboratory (NIPS) at the Department of Physics of the University of Perugia, directed by Prof. L. Gammaitoni. For the role of noise in limiting the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors, I joined Virgo since 1999, leading the research group of Perugia. I participated in several European Projects led by the NIPS Laboratory on energy harvesting and smart ICT. I am author of more than 200 scientific publications and 6 patents.
