A laser through the sky of Lyon

A laser through the sky of Lyon

by Jerome Degallaix (Laboratoire des Matériaux Avancés, Lyon)

From the 24th to the 27th of September, a green colored laser has done a round trip between the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the city hall of Vaulx en Velin, 7 km away. Thanks to a simple rotating mirror, it has been possible for people to measure the speed of light.

Many people came at the basilica, met scientists and asked many questions about light and lasers. The event was free and open to everyone from 8pm the evening up to midnight during the 4 days.
The event has been mainly organised by the ILM and the planetarium of Vaulx en Velin.
